Concept art

Here are some of my recent conceptual art pieces. These are personal projects to further develop my concept art skills. Using photoshop and illustrator to create custom brushes has given me a chance to develop my skill set.

I have been working for so long on traditional graphic design an animation I found that I had almost forgotten how to create concept art all together. I had seen some tutorials online that showcased concept art techniques and brush methods. I then decided to try and re create the images I had seen online using the new methods I had learnt from the tutorial videos I had seen.

The process of creating these images started from a blank page, first I sketched a quick outline of the image I wanted. This took only a few minutes as it only needed to be rough and would be covered in paint later. I then started to layer the tones and shading starting with the dark tones then getting lighter. This is a reverse to other processes as you would normally paint the lighter before the dark. I found that dark before light worked better for myself this is a totally personal choice.

Once I have layered the basic tones I began adding detail and texture using my personal brush set. The overall outcome was much more refined than I originally thought it could be. The pieces are shown below.

Here are some of my design process images. I had been practicing tones and realistic rock shapes and tones in different colours and shapes. I had added the notes to help me know where light and shade needed to be to accurately visualise the shapes.

Here are the images I had recreated from images I had seen online. I took my time and added rough strokes. The idea was to keep it as rough as possible however I slowly turned the images into a more realistic and depth orientated images. I am very happy with the way these images turned out and it has given me more confidence in continuing my concept art passions in the future.

This is my favourite image that I had worked on. The detail and rough nature of the brush strokes works on a variety of levels. As such this has become my most fun and best value in terms of personal progression. I learnt a lot from this image and plan to apply it to my future work.
