"How Do We Think About Modernism?" (Lecture Notes)

Modernism

Lowry

Being one of the greatest artists of all time and certainly one of the most widely taught at young ages, Lowry's work has been at the front-line of modernist depictions of the emerging modern world. His depiction of the modern lifestyle of people around him with warped sensations and the clear determination to make art out of emerging modern cities is inspired and held a generation to heel as he continued to visually represent the modern world around him in ever expanding depth and significance.

Another great artist who's work has a heavy base withing modernism is artist Gustave Caillebotte whos work depicts the height of contemporary fashion in and around the 1870's.

Here is one of his best known works and oil painting depicting 1877 a street in Paris on a rainy day the piece is called Paris Street; Rainy day. This image has strong contemporary modernism features. The solid and well modernized buildings and streets, the fresh revolutionary lamp and heights of fashion, transportation and social order. This painting is a bold stamp on 1877 Paris and a strong representation of the presence of modernism in this time.
