Speed Sketching

10 minute sketch

Today during a break period at my place of work I was challenged by my co workers to produce a 10 minute sketch as best I could. This was all a bit of fun to pass some time however I liked the idea of a challenge set by someone with a strict time limit and a set design. I was told to Draw a skull of some kind. As I have already had experience in drawing skulls and fantasy style dark illustrations I jumped at the offer (Naturally).

Here is the finished piece. I aimed to keep it simple and rough with plenty of sketch lines and rough edges. My colleges were impressed and gave comments. Ranging from "Wow, that is dark" to "thats amazing". I explained how I had learned to draw these through college and university influences including friends and peers.

This experience although short and informal gave me the idea to challenge myself to time myself drawing. this process I intended to test my knowledge of shape form and precision. I would start with these same skull designs and move onto different styles pushing myself each time to draw faster and more realistic.

Here is the second attempt I made in my own time again only taking 10 minutes (Timed).
As you can see the second design features more form and shading as well as a different perspective and a higher level of detail.

Doing this gave me the idea to start to film myself sketching and drawing against a timer and see how far my designs can be pushed under a time limit. I will be doing this in the not too distant future as a hobby and as a test of everything I have learnt to date. Watch this space.
