Visualisation of Sound (Lecture Notes)

This lecture explored the idea of using sound as the basis behind the visual communication of a brief. This was directly relevant to my second project brief of creating a visual response to a series of short pieces of music.

There are three forms of output:

  1. Notation
  2. Interpretation
  3. Experimentation
Notation

This is the transcription of a sound based language. For example, a musical graphic score includes a series of musical notations that uses the relevant symbols to create a performance.

Graphical Notation - how sound can be processed and interpreted in a visual form.

Interpretation

Graphic interpretation of a piece of music can essentially involve anything as it is completely down to the discretion of the designer and the influence that piece of music has over them.

The first image is of the Hurrian Hymn No. 6 which is the oldest written piece of music found in the world. The second image is Wolfgang Schweizer's personal interpretation of this piece of music. While to everyone else this may look completely unrelated, it is the artists interpretation of that piece of music that he has conveyed to his audience in a visual way.

Experimentation

It is important with an interpretation exercise to experiment with different techniques in order to find the technique that best fits with my interpretation of the music brief. During this project I would like to experiment with photography, film and computer design programmes.
