Helvetica (Lecture Notes - Film)

This lecture was based around watching the feature-length independent film Helvetica by Gary Hustwit that focuses on both typography and general Graphic Design. It was released in 2007 which coincided with the 50th anniversary of the typeface's introduction.

The documentary revolves around the popularity of the 'helvetica' font and uses this to open a discussion about urban city spaces and the creative process behind the elements that make up Graphic Design and the work that is created from it. Throughout the film are small interviews with leading designers and typeface creators such as Hermann Zapf and Michael Bierut, who discuss their creative influences and uses of typefaces in their own work.

The film was particularly in-depth and while it was interesting to learnt the history behind the typeface, I didn't feel that I was able to take much away from it to apply in my own work.
