Graphic Responses to Sound (Lecture Notes)

"If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of Energy, Frequency and Vibration."
                              - Nikola Tesla

This lecture expanded on our previous lecture focusing on sound. It encouraged us to think of other techniques that we could use in order to successfully convey sound through a visual image.

Morse Code

Morse Code is an example of a method of transmitting text through sound that can be received and interpreted by another without the use of translation equipment.

I used "http://morsecode.scphillips.com/translator.html" to translate the message "This is a visual response to sound" into the following sounds and image.

- .... .. ... / .. ... / .- / ...- .. ... ..- .- .-.. / .-. . ... .--. --- -. ... . / - --- / ... --- ..- -. -.. .-.-.-
This is the resulting visual image of the sounds of the statement I translated into morse code.

Techniques such as this are an interesting consideration for my project brief as it provides me with examples of past methods of converting sounds into visual images and vice versa. While I will not be using techniques such as these, in favour of creating more graphically creative responses, it is interesting to see that sound and images have been used in conjunction with one another for many decades.
