Distortion In Maps

It is completely artificial that we have the north at the top of the map. The convention came a few centuries ago when northern hemisphere, European navigators started using the north star and magnetic compass. Before the top of the map was to the east  (To jerusalem in the orient) Which is where the word orientation comes from".

Modern maps tend to be more bias towards cars. As more and more cars are produced there will subsequently be more and more drivers on the road a knock on effect of this is there will be a greater demand for up to date road maps. However these maps are used mainly by road users and not general footfall public. The public then have to resort to using google maps which at times due to lack of signal or internet. if this is not possible then the hard task of trawling through old maps to find a relevant local map to the area you wish to visit/explore. Even then some of these maps can leave out small paths and cycle tracks.

There are many ways maps have been distorted in history.
